With its new project, *kontakt.*, the German Sports Youth (dsj) will, from 2025 onwards, actively combat ultra-nationalist and far-right movements within the sporting community. Sport stands for fairness, solidarity and diversity – yet far-right groups deliberately use sport as a recruitment ground – including within migrant communities.

‘kontakt.’ raises awareness of these developments and aims to fill the gap left by a lack of analysis and strategies in order to counteract this trend.

The dsj’s new project, “kontakt. – Ultranationalist and far-right movements in the sporting environment”, which is part of the federal program “Demokratie leben!”, addresses precisely this issue:

  • Identify: Analysing ultranationalist structures in sport
  • Educate: Raising awareness amongst sports federations and clubs
  • Network: Exchange with those affected and specialist organisations
  • Strengthen prevention: Engaging young people with democratic values

In the first year of the project, the focus is on Turkish ultranationalism in sport – a challenge that has received little research attention to date but is growing. Over the following three years, the project will also examine other manifestations of right-wing extremism (such as Russian-German, Polish groups and those from the Western Balkans).

Specialist events and targeted workshops for sports federations, clubs and key influencers are designed to provide practical recommendations for action and raise awareness of the issue. A further aim is to establish and strengthen a network of experts in order to promote dialogue between specialist bodies, clubs and those affected, and to develop long-term strategies to combat ultra-nationalism and right-wing extremism in sport.

A research study will also examine the existing structures and developments of ultra-nationalist movements in sport. The findings will serve as a basis for further measures.

Strong networks are essential to ensure that right-wing extremism and ultra-nationalism have no place in sport. Open dialogue and fresh ideas help to develop sustainable solutions that contribute to strengthening democracy.
